SEVA
A deep and essential value in Yoga is Seva, a Sanskrit word that means service beyond self. Over her twelve years teaching Yoga in San Diego, Laura taught regular, free classes to the following communities ~
Shakti Rising, a residential recovery center for young women; CoronadoSAFE, supporting families and children; Rachel’s Place, for homeless women; The Foundation for Women, growing a healthier world through micro-loans and business training for women in challenged places; Outdoor Outreach, using outdoor activity to inspire youth to see possibility and opportunity; La Maestra Community Health, serving women and families in underserved communities; San Ysidro Health Clinics, restoring the care in health care; Harmonium Family Services, building healthy communities by strengthening the health in families; and the Braille Institute.
From this experience, she developed Deep Yoga Seva, so graduates of her Yoga Teacher Training could continue teaching Yoga to these communities and beyond. For more on these projects, please read Laura’s interview with Rob Schware on the Huffington Post.
Sophia Camp Leader Sally Tinker’s “I AM” Collage
The Sophia Camp is the ultimate expression of this desire to give back all she has received from her teachers, family and friends, and to share the genius of the Vedic sciences with all. Sophia Camp is a week-long, day camp for Middle and High school age girls aims to cultivate self-esteem, self-care and self-regulation through the gifts of Yoga & Ayurveda. Days include Expressive Arts, “Lunch with (STEM) Leaders,” Listening Circles and Productive Play all designed with measurable activities to grow compassionate leadership and resiliency. After all, today’s girls are tomorrow’s mothers, wives, peers and world leaders!
Additionally, Laura has started a Scholarship Fund to support individuals with chronic illness in travelling to and staying one month at Vaidyagrama, an Ayurvedic Healing Village in south India – and to support Parmarth Niketan’s Medical Camp in north India, where she recently worked delivering Yoga Therapy and Ayurveda to rural women and children, and saw first-hand the power of these ancient sciences to cross all boundaries and heal, empower, uplift and transform.
